Chapter Thirty-Five: The
Apex — Zero Point

Let me tell you about the
moment the pyramid became personal.
We had spent three days at
Giza by that point — Angel with her camera and her Arabic-speaking guide and
her inexhaustible appetite for hieroglyphic inscription, me with my notebook
and my growing sense that Egypt was not separate from everything that had
preceded it on this journey but was its destination, the place all the other
places had been pointing toward. The underground Naga tunnels. The volcanic
lava ducts. The Konark temple with its suspended idol and its magnetic
lodestones. The flying discs over Antarctica. The submerged cities of Dwarka
and Mahabalipuram. All of it had been preparing me for this: standing at the
base of the Great Pyramid of Giza and understanding, not intellectually but in
the body, that the same hand had built all of it. The same mind. The same
intergalactic civilisation that had arrived on this planet with a specific
intention and a specific instrument and had been working, across epochs and
cataclysms and the long patient revolutions of the ages, toward a specific
conclusion.
The conclusion was us. The
fifth race. The current inhabitants of the surface of a planet that had been
seeded and tended and periodically reset by beings of extraordinary capability
who had, in the depth of their accumulated wisdom, understood something that
the history of civilisations repeatedly demonstrates and rarely retains:
That knowledge without love
destroys. That power without wisdom consumes itself. That the purpose of an
intergalactic civilisation is not the conquest of other worlds but the
cultivation of them — the patient, gardener's work of planting, tending, waiting,
and trusting that what grows will, in time, surpass the gardener.
All of this I understood
standing at the base of the Great Pyramid on the third morning.
Then Angel said: "I
want to go to the top."

The
Climb
Climbing the Great Pyramid
is, officially, not permitted. Unofficially, it has been done continuously
since the pyramid was built, by tourists and scholars and mystics and, in the
present day, by people with sufficient determination and a guide sufficiently
motivated by the economics of the situation.
Our guide was Tariq — a
compact, sun-weathered Cairene of fifty who had been navigating the Giza
plateau and its various regulations for thirty years and had developed, in that
time, a sophisticated understanding of which rules were load-bearing and which
were decorative. He looked at Angel, who was looking at the pyramid with the
expression she wore when she had decided something and was waiting for the
practical details to arrange themselves, and he said something in Arabic.
"He says the best time
is before the authorities open," she told me. "He says four in the
morning. He says bring gloves."
"He's done this
before," I said.
"Many times," she
said. "He says each time is different."
She was looking at me with
the direct, attending gaze of a person extending an invitation that has the
form of a question and the weight of a statement.
"What if," I
said.
She smiled. "What
if," she agreed.
The climb at four in the
morning, by the light of a half-moon and a torch that Tariq handled with the
calm confidence of a man who knows every stone, takes approximately forty-five
minutes. The limestone blocks are enormous — each one between one and five
metres in height, the climber moving between them rather than over them in the
upper sections, the body finding its own route through the geometry as the
geometry permits.
Angel climbed with the
sure-footedness she brought to everything physical — the same quality she had
shown on the Bhrigu Lake trail, in the lava tunnel, on the steps of Konark. Not
reckless. Absolutely committed. Moving through the difficulty with the full
attention of someone who has no interest in making it smaller than it is.
The city below us as we
climbed was extraordinary — Cairo in the pre-dawn, its ten million inhabitants
largely unconscious, the distant minarets lit for Fajr, the highway lights
making their orange geometry in the flat delta landscape, the Nile invisible
but present in the black corridor of absence between the city lights on either
bank.
And then the apex.
The original capstone — the
pyramidion — is gone, removed or lost in the centuries of spoliation that
followed the Arab conquest. What remains is a flattened summit of perhaps ten
square metres, the rough-hewn limestone of the inner core exposed, the polished
white casing stone that had once covered the entire structure present only in
the imagination of what it had been. But the location is intact. The
coordinates are intact. The relationship between this point and the stars above
it — the relationship that the architects had calculated to a precision that
still astonishes contemporary astronomers — is intact.
We stood at the apex and
the wind came.

Zero
Point — The Memory Breaks Through
The wind at the top of the
Great Pyramid at Giza is not an ordinary wind.
I mean this physically as
well as experientially. The pyramid's specific geometry — the precise angle of
its faces, 51.5 degrees, which is the angle that produces the most efficient
focusing of the electromagnetic energy rising from the earth below and descending
from the cosmic field above — creates a vortex at the apex. The ancient
Egyptians understood this and placed their pyramidion there not merely as a
capstone but as a collector: a gilded point at the convergence of the focused
fields, a terminal where the energy of the structure could discharge and
receive in both directions simultaneously.
The original pyramidion was
electrum — an alloy of gold and silver, both excellent conductors. The pyramid
was, among all its other functions, a power station. The apex was the
interface.
Standing there, in the wind
that moved through the vortex with the organised purposefulness of a current
rather than the randomness of weather, I felt the pyramid functioning beneath
me. Not metaphorically. The stone conducts — the piezoelectric properties of
the granite in the inner chambers, the water table deep beneath the plateau
vibrating with the resonant frequency of the structure above it, the entire
assembly operating as it had been designed to operate, regardless of the
centuries, regardless of the missing capstone, regardless of the three million
tourists per year who had walked across its surface without knowing what they
were walking on.
Angel gripped my arm
against the wind.
And the world shifted.
Not dramatically. Not with
the abrupt transition of the volcanic tunnel or the sudden resolution of the
Konark sanctum. More like a photograph developing — the present overlaid by
something deeper, an older image rising through the current one as the chemical
bath of the apex's electromagnetic field dissolved the ordinary boundaries of
time.
I was here before.
Not as a tourist. Not as a
visitor. As the person who built it.

Chapter Thirty-Six: The
Observatory — Atlantis in Its Last Hours

The room was circular,
perhaps twenty metres in diameter, its walls lined with instruments whose
function I knew with the automatic certainty of a person operating equipment
they have used for years. Not memory — something deeper than memory. The body
knowledge of expertise, encoded below the level of conscious recall.
The blackboard — and there
was a blackboard, enormous, covering the full curve of one wall, covered in
calculations in a notation that was not the notation of contemporary
mathematics but was, unmistakably, mathematics — was covered in numbers and
symbols that I could read. That I had written.
Through the observation
windows: the sea.
Not the calm Mediterranean
of the current age. The sea of the last days of Atlantis — a sea that had been
rising for six months, faster in the last three weeks than in the six months
before, the acceleration precisely as the models had predicted and precisely as
the politicians had refused to believe until the models were demonstrating
themselves in real time through the flooding of the coastal cities and the
failure of the sea walls and the evacuation ships that were not nearly
sufficient in number for the population that needed them.
The sky was the colour of a
bruise — the specific purple-grey of atmosphere under extreme meteorological
stress, the cloud cover total and low, the lightning moving through it in
horizontal sheets rather than vertical strikes, the ionosphere destabilised by
the incoming debris from the supernova remnant that had been approaching for
two hundred years and had now arrived.
Angel was beside me. In
this memory — this living memory, this vision at the apex of the pyramid — she
was not Angel as I knew her. She was older, or perhaps simply differently old,
the same quality of intelligence and attention in a different face, wearing the
practical clothing of a scientist in a working environment, her hair pulled
back, her hands ink-stained in the manner of someone who has been writing
calculations by hand for many hours.
She looked at me with the
direct, attending gaze that I would, eleven thousand years later, recognise
across the wreckage of a car on a mountain road in the Himalayas.
"The calculations are
confirmed," she said.
"Yes," I said.
"The family?"
"Three hours. If they
left when they said they would leave."
We had done everything we
could do. The question now was the variable we had not been able to control:
whether the people we loved had had the courage to leave when the science said
to leave, rather than waiting for the physical evidence that by then would be
too late.
This is the tragedy that
repeats in every age the planet has seen — not the cataclysm itself, which is
indifferent and does not care about tragedy, but the specifically human failure
to act on knowledge before the knowledge becomes undeniable. The scientists who
model the catastrophe understand it in their bones years before the public is
willing to believe it. The gap between the understanding and the belief is
where the preventable deaths live.
I had been a scientist. I
had modelled this catastrophe for twenty years. I had been ignored, then
dismissed, then reluctantly consulted, then — in the final months — desperately
believed by people who had waited too long.
Three hours. If they left
when they said they would leave.

The
Supernova — The Calculation on the Blackboard
Let me explain what I had
found, because it is the foundation of everything that followed — the decisions
made, the knowledge distributed, the people who went under the earth and the
people who went to the stars and the people who stayed and began again.
A star had died.
Not our sun — a star in the
neighbourhood, by cosmic standards: close enough that its death was visible to
the naked eye for weeks, a new light in the sky that the ancient astronomers of
Atlantis had recorded and studied and eventually understood in terms that
contemporary astrophysics is only now recovering.
When a star of sufficient
mass reaches the end of its fuel, it does not merely dim and cool. It collapses
inward with catastrophic violence and then rebounds in an explosion of such
energy that it briefly outshines the entire galaxy containing it. A supernova.
In the collapse and the explosion, conditions of pressure and temperature exist
that do not occur anywhere else in the observable universe — conditions in
which atomic nuclei fuse into elements heavier than iron, elements that cannot
be produced by the ordinary fusion reactions of a living star.
Gold. Platinum. Uranium.
The heavy elements that make life possible and technology possible and, in the
specific case of uranium, civilisational catastrophe possible.
The debris from the
supernova had been travelling toward our solar system for two hundred years.
Comets and meteorites carrying gold and platinum and the heavy elements, but
also carrying mass — enormous mass, moving at a significant fraction of the
speed of light, and when mass moving at that velocity encounters a planetary
system, the gravitational consequences are not small.
I had written it on the
blackboard, in the notation we used, the full chain of consequence:

GRAVITATIONAL PERTURBATION: tidal forces on
planetary crust: maximum stress point 72.4°N, 28.1°W

OCEANIC CONSEQUENCE: sea level rise 60-80m over
18-24 months
IMPACT SITES: PROBABLE GOLD DEPOSITS → Indian
subcontinent, East Africa, Andean range
CONCLUSION: Total submersion of Atlantic landmass.
Irreversible.
RECOMMENDATION: Immediate evacuation to elevated
sites. Pyramid observatories operational.
NOTE: The pyramids will survive. The knowledge
will survive. The species will survive.
The civilisation, in its current form, will not.
I had submitted this report
to the Council of Atlantis nineteen months before the morning we stood at the
observation windows watching the sea rise.
The Council had thanked me
for my work and requested additional data.
The Council had requested
an independent review.
The Council had formed a
committee.
The committee had reported
back six months later with a finding of "uncertain" and a
recommendation for further study.
By that point, the coastal
flooding had begun and the Committee on Further Study had been dissolved and
replaced by an Emergency Council that had called me back and asked me to
present my findings again, urgently, to people who were now willing to listen
because the water was already at their doors.
We had nineteen months. We
had used eleven of them on institutional process. We had eight months left to
do what should have been done from the beginning.
It was, in the way of all
such situations, barely enough.

The
Last Hours — The Family Arrives
The wave was visible forty
minutes before it arrived.
From the observation
platform — which was, I should be precise, not the apex of what we now call the
Great Pyramid but the apex of its Atlantean predecessor, a structure of similar
geometry built on the same node of the planetary electromagnetic grid that the
later Egyptian builders had chosen for the same reason — from the observation
platform, in the breaks between the cloud and the rain, you could see the ocean
doing what oceans do before a major wave event: pulling back. Withdrawing from
the shore in a retreat that, to anyone who understood what it signified, was
the most terrifying sight available.
Because the pulling back is
the inhale. The wave is the exhale.
I had been at the
observation window for six hours, alternating between the calculations on the
blackboard and the view outside, the two activities constituting the only
options available to a scientist who has done everything in his power and is
now in the position of waiting for the universe to demonstrate whether the
preparations were sufficient.
Angel had been beside me
for most of those hours — not speaking much, because there was not much to say
that the calculations hadn't already said, but present in the specific way that
she was always present: fully, without reservation, turned entirely toward
whatever was happening without requiring it to be manageable before she would
face it.
The wave appeared on the
horizon as a thickening — not the white-topped fury of a storm wave but
something more fundamental, a darkening of the line between the sea and the
sky, as though the sea had decided to become the sky and was in the process of
making the transition.
"Now," I said.
She went to the door.
Outside: wind, rain, and at
the base of the pyramid, running through the flooding water with the desperate,
focused purpose of people who have been told to leave and have left too late
but not quite late enough — our colleagues, our families, the people I loved.
The ones who had believed the science and had waited anyway because leaving is
the hardest thing, because the place you are leaving is your life, your city,
your civilisation, the accumulated meaning of everything you have built, and
the body resists departure from meaning even when the mind understands that
departure is survival.
They came. Soaked and
frightened and alive. They came through the door that Angel held open against
the wind and they came into the observatory and they came into the arms of the
people waiting for them and the door was sealed — the water-tight door that the
engineers had calculated would hold against pressures of up to two hundred
metres of ocean depth, which was the maximum the models predicted for this
location.
The wave hit.
The pyramid absorbed it the
way the pyramid absorbed everything — by redirecting the force along its faces,
distributing the energy through the geometry of the stone, the same physics by
which the pyramid had survived everything the centuries had thrown at it and
would survive everything the centuries would continue to throw at it after the
waters receded and the surviving humans found it and built their own
civilisation around its mystery.
We held each other in the
observatory room as the world ended outside.
The lights of the
instruments continued to glow. The calculations on the blackboard continued to
be true.
We were alive.
Most of the rest of
Atlantis was not.

Chapter Thirty- Seven: The Decision
— Two Groups, Two Destinies

The waters took forty days
to stabilise.
I do not think this is a
coincidence, given what appears in so many subsequent traditions. Forty days
and forty nights. The number has the quality of something precise — not
symbolic, not approximate, but the actual interval between the wave event and
the point at which the new shoreline had established itself sufficiently that
the observatory's external sensors could provide a reliable picture of what the
surface world now looked like.
What it looked like was
this: reduced.
The Atlantean landmass —
the mid-Atlantic continent that had been the centre of our civilisation, the
seat of its technology and its culture and its accumulated twelve-thousand-year
history — was gone. Not partially submerged, not damaged. Gone. Where the
cities had been: ocean. Where the plains and forests and the ancient mountain
ranges had been: ocean. The sea level had risen sixty-eight metres — within the
range of my highest projection, above the midpoint of my most probable
scenario.
The outlier sites had
survived. The pyramid observatories on the elevated locations — this one, and
the others we had built precisely because we had known, long before the Council
of Atlantis was willing to know, that we would need them. The site in what was
now the Yucatan. The site in what the surviving people of the eastern migration
would call Bharat and the world would later call India. The Antarctic site,
deep enough in the ice that the sea level rise did not threaten it. And the
site beneath the sea itself — the crystal pyramid structure at coordinates that
would later appear on the maps of the Bermuda Triangle, still functioning under
three hundred metres of water, still transmitting on frequencies that our
monitoring equipment could read.
We were forty-seven people
in the observatory.
We had food and water for
two years. We had oxygen generation systems that would run indefinitely. We had
the full archive of Atlantean knowledge — the sciences and the arts and the
astronomical records and the genetic databases and, most importantly, the
understanding of the principles that had produced all of it: the geometric
language of consciousness expressing itself in matter, the electromagnetic
foundations of all technology, the relationship between mind and field that the
Konark builders would later encode in their magnetically suspended idol and the
Vedic scholars would later describe as the relationship between Purusha and
Prakriti, between the witnessing consciousness and the field it witnesses.
We had everything.
The question was what to do
with it.
We sat in the observatory,
in the blue-green light of the monitoring equipment, with the Atlantic ocean
pressing against the water-tight doors, and we debated the future of the
species.

The
Choice
The debate lasted eleven
days. I know this because I wrote it down — not the full transcript, which
would fill several volumes, but the essential architecture of the argument,
which resolved ultimately into two positions that were not as opposite as they
initially appeared.
The first position was
articulated by a woman named Vara — a geneticist, the finest mind of her
generation, the person who had understood before any of the rest of us the
significance of what the supernova's gold deposits were doing to the soil
chemistry of the surviving landmasses and what that soil chemistry would do,
over generations, to the nutritional profile of the food grown in it, and what
that nutritional profile would do to the neurological development of the people
who ate it. She had, in short, understood that the next civilisation would be
biologically different from ours, not worse necessarily, but different — shaped
by conditions we had not experienced and could not fully model.
Her position: return to the
surface. Distribute the knowledge. Merge with the survivors — the fourth
generation of human beings, the people who had been living alongside our
civilisation in the less technologically developed regions of the planet, the
ones we had called, with the unconscious condescension of the technologically
advanced, the primitives, but who had survived precisely because their
relationship with the natural world did not depend on the infrastructure we had
built and that the flood had destroyed. Merge with them. Give them the
knowledge slowly, in forms they could absorb. Guide the development of the
fifth civilisation from within it.
"We become
teachers," Vara said. "We become the Sages. We become the lineage
that the traditions of the next world will call the Seven, or the Fourteen, or
the Immortals, because we will live long enough to seem immortal to people
whose lives are measured in decades rather than centuries. We seed the
knowledge and we tend it and we trust the process."
The second position was
articulated by a man I will call the Admiral — because that was his function,
the commander of our deep-space program, the person who had spent forty years
developing the technology that had allowed us to visit seven planetary systems
and had returned from those visits with the understanding that we were not
alone, that the universe was inhabited at a density and a diversity that our
civilisation had only begun to map.
His position: go further
under. Into the earth itself. Into the hollow places that the volcanic
geophysics of a living planet create between its crust and its mantle — the
vast subterranean spaces that our deepest drilling programs had confirmed
existed, lit by their own bioluminescence, heated by the earth's internal
energy, navigable by flying disc through the polar openings that the planet's
centrifugal forces created at the geographic poles.
"We become the deep
ones," the Admiral said. "We live below. We maintain contact with the
surface through the monitoring systems in the observatories. We continue our
scientific work without the interruption of political structures that cannot
process the timescales we work on. We travel — to other planets, to other stars
— and return. And when the surface civilisation has reached the level of
understanding that can receive what we have learned, we come back. Not as
returning strangers. As long-anticipated kin."
He paused.
"The fifth
civilisation," he said, "will need what we know. But it will only be
able to use it when it has developed the wisdom to hold it without destroying
itself. Our job is to be ready when that moment arrives. It may be ten thousand
years from now. It may be more. We can wait."
Eleven days of debate. Not
argument — debate. The distinction matters. Argument is the contest of
positions. Debate is the exploration of positions, the testing of each against
the other until the truth, which usually contains both, becomes visible.
The truth that became
visible was this: we needed both.

The
Two Groups
The surface group — Vara's
group, twenty-three people — would return to the world. They would carry the
knowledge in forms that could survive the transition: in the oral traditions of
the people they joined, in the sacred geometry of the temples they would help
to build, in the astronomical alignments that would allow future civilisations
to read the sky as a record of what had been known, in the genetic inheritance
of the children they would have with the fourth-generation humans, children who
would carry, in their DNA, the compressed memory of what Atlantis had been.
They would be the Seven
Sages. The Fourteen Manus. The Babajis and the Yogi masters and the palm-leaf
astrologers and the Fakirs in the mountain huts and every being across every
tradition that had come to be called immortal because they had lived long enough
to seem so.
They would work slowly.
Patiently. Planting seeds in the consciousness of the species that would take
generations to germinate and centuries to flower. They would encode the
knowledge in the scriptures and the temple architecture and the astronomical
tables and the geometric patterns that kept reappearing across cultures that
had never met, because the pattern was not cultural — it was the structure of
reality itself, the grammar of the universe, which any sufficiently attentive
mind will eventually read.
The deep group — the
Admiral's group, twenty-four people — would go under.
The tunnels had been
mapped. The volcanic lava ducts that ran from the pyramid's foundations into
the deep earth, created over millions of years by the movement of magma through
the planet's crust, provided the route. The flying discs provided the transport.
The subterranean spaces — confirmed by our geophysical surveys to be real,
large, and habitable, lit by the bioluminescence of the organisms that had
evolved there over geological time, heated by the earth's internal energy to
temperatures compatible with human life — would be home.
From there: the stars. The
Admiral had established diplomatic relationships with three of the seven
planetary systems he had visited. The consciousness of those civilisations —
older than ours, wiser in the specific ways that age and difficulty produce wisdom
— would be available to those who travelled to them. The deep group would learn
what could only be learned away from the pressure and noise of a surface
civilisation in the process of its own becoming. They would develop the
understanding of the fifth civilisation from the outside, seeing it whole,
seeing it across the span of its entire arc, the way you can only see a forest
from the air.
And when the moment was
right — when the surface civilisation had developed the love to hold the
knowledge without destroying itself — the deep group would return.
Not as invaders. Not as
gods. As the other half of a people that had divided in order to survive and
was ready, at last, to become whole again.

What
Was Left at the Feet of the Sphinx
Before the surface group
departed, we made an archive.
Not a physical archive — we
had learned from Atlantis's own destruction the vulnerability of physical
storage. Everything that can be built can be unbuilt. Everything that can be
written can be burned. The most durable storage medium available to us was not
stone or crystal or magnetic field but consciousness itself — the DNA, which
carries information at a density and with a durability that no technology we
had produced could match.
We encoded what we knew in
the genetic material of the people going to the surface. Not the equations
directly — the human genome cannot hold equations. But the structures of
understanding that produce equations: the capacity for spatial reasoning, for pattern
recognition, for the intuitive grasp of geometric relationship that allows a
mind to see the structure of reality rather than merely its surface. The
curiosity. The capacity for love, which is the essential prerequisite for the
correct use of knowledge — the thing that distinguishes a civilisation that
builds toward flourishing from a civilisation that builds toward destruction.
We encoded love in the DNA
of the fifth race.
This is not a metaphor.
This is what the Yogi had described in the cave behind Vasundhara Falls — the
body as archive, the DNA as library. The memory is not lost. It is waiting. In
every human being alive on the surface of this planet right now, the compressed
memory of Atlantis waits to be read. The knowledge is there. The capacity is
there. It has always been there.
The question is the quality
of attention brought to the reading.
We also left a physical
record — not for us, but for the surface civilisation at the point when it
would be ready to find it. The record was placed, in waterproof containers of
an alloy we had developed that would resist corrosion for at least fifteen thousand
years, in the chamber beneath the paw of the Sphinx.
The Sphinx had been built
before the flood — we had built it, in fact, as a guardian and a marker, the
face of its own age looking toward the eastern horizon and the rising sun, the
body of a lion because the lion was the constellation that rose with the sun at
the time of building. Twelve and a half thousand years before the present, the
Sphinx looked not east but toward Leo on the horizon — which is why its age,
calculated from the astronomical alignment, predates the civilisation that the
conventional history of Egypt assigns to its construction.
The record beneath the
Sphinx is still there.
It is waiting, as all
things wait, for the correct quality of attention.

The
Renunciation — What I Left Behind
I need to tell you what I
understood, in the final hours, that I had not understood before.
I had been a scientist for
the entirety of my Atlantean life. I had given that life to the understanding
of how the universe works — the physics of electromagnetic fields, the
mathematics of gravitational interaction, the chemistry of stellar nucleosynthesis,
the biology of consciousness and its relationship to the physical brain. I was
good at it. I was, perhaps, the best of my generation at it.
And I had not been able to
prevent the flood.
Not because the science was
insufficient — the science was exactly sufficient. The calculations were
correct. The models were accurate. The predictions came true to within the
margins of error I had specified. Everything the science said would happen, happened,
on the schedule the science had specified.
The science was not the
problem.
The problem was that the
science existed within a political and social structure that was not adequate
to receive it — that could not act on what the science knew because the acting
required a quality of collective will and shared commitment that the civilisation
had not developed. We had the knowledge. We had not developed the love.
I stood in the observatory
as the surface group prepared to leave, and I understood something that I want
to write down very carefully because it is the most important thing I have
understood in the course of this long, extraordinary journey:
Knowledge is the map. Love
is the territory.
All the science in the
world — the electromagnetic physics of the pyramid, the genetic encoding of the
DNA, the astronomical precision of Konark's wheels, the magnetic suspension of
the floating idol — all of it is the map. It describes the territory. It points
at the territory. It can, in the hands of a sufficiently developed
civilisation, help the territory flourish.
But the territory is love.
The territory is the relationship between consciousness and consciousness,
between the knower and the known, between the being that experiences and the
universe it experiences. The map describes it. The map cannot replace it.
Atlantis had the finest
maps in the history of the planet.
Atlantis had not loved well
enough.
I placed my notebooks — all
of them, every calculation, every model, every paper I had written in forty
years of science — in the containers that would go beneath the Sphinx. I placed
them there not with grief but with the specific relief of a person releasing
something that has served its purpose and can now be set down.
Then I went with the deep
group, through the tunnels, toward the earth's interior.
Not because I was done with
the surface. Because the surface needed something from me that was not the
science. The surface needed the understanding that the science had, in its long
and rigorous and beautiful way, led me to.
It needed the love that the
knowledge had failed to transmit in Atlantis.
And to give that, I needed
to go away first. To learn it properly, in the places where it could be
learned. To come back, when the time was right, as something more than a
scientist.
Perhaps as a Yogi. Perhaps
as a Fakir. Perhaps as a man on a mountain road who pulls over for a
broken-down car and recognises, in the grey-green eyes of the woman looking at
the mountains, something he has known across eleven thousand years and three civilisations
and has been waiting, with the patience of someone who knows what waiting is
for, to find again.

Chapter Thirty- Eight: Coming
Back — The Apex in the Present

The wind died.
I was aware, first, of the
cold — the cold of the Giza plateau at four-thirty in the morning, which is a
real and considerable cold, the desert releasing its stored heat into the night
sky with the efficiency that desert always displays once the sun is gone. I was
aware of the stone under my feet — the rough limestone of the pyramid's
flattened summit, ancient and specific and entirely physical.
I was aware of Angel.
She was facing east, toward
the horizon where the first grey light of dawn was beginning its announcement.
Her back was to me. She was very still — not the stillness of someone waiting
for something to be over, but the stillness of someone who is entirely inside
an experience and is holding every part of themselves quiet in order to receive
it completely.
I did not speak.
After a long time, she
turned.
Her face in the pre-dawn
light was the face of someone who has just been somewhere and is still,
partially, in the place they have been — the dual occupancy of the person
returning from vision, which I recognised from the mirror in the days after
Manasarovar and Bhrigu Lake and the Konark sanctum.
"You were there,"
she said. Not a question.
"Yes," I said.
"The observatory. The
blackboard. The wave."
"Yes."
"We were
together." She said this with the quality of someone stating a fact that
has the dimensions of a much larger fact inside it. "Not for the first
time."
"Not for the first
time," I agreed.
She was quiet for a moment.
The eastern horizon was lightening in the specific way that desert dawns light
— not gradually, not by increment, but in a series of sudden revelations, each
one definitive, each one superseded almost immediately by the next as the sky
moved through its spectrum from the black of full night to the blue-grey of the
hour before the sun to the orange-gold of the minute before the sun clears the
horizon.
"I saw myself on the
blackboard," she said. "My name. My calculations. A different
language, a different notation — but mine. I recognised my own thinking the way
you recognise your own handwriting."
"Vara," I said.
She looked at me sharply.
"The geneticist,"
I said. "The one who argued for the surface. Who understood that the
knowledge had to be seeded in the species — slowly, in forms the species could
absorb over generations."
She absorbed this. I
watched her processing it with the specific quality of attention she brought to
information that was reorganising her understanding of herself — the same
quality she had brought to the Fakir's palm leaf, to the astrologer's past-life
narrative, to the Jataka Tales in the Ajanta caves.
"The
documentary," she said finally. "The Silk Route. The Jataka paintings
— the cosmopolitan world encoded in the cave walls so it could survive the
centuries until the centuries were ready for it." She looked at the
horizon. "I've been doing it again. The same work. A different
medium."
"You have always been
doing it," I said. "In every life the palm leaf listed. The lapis
lazuli whose pigment became the blue of sacred art across three continents. The
painter's assistant who spent thirty years learning what she would spend the
next life teaching. The princess who carried the silkworm eggs across the ocean
— carrying the knowledge in the only container available, her own body,
trusting the destination even without knowing it."
She was quiet for a long
time.
The sun cleared the
horizon.
It arrived the way it
always arrives at Giza at the solstice — precisely, without ceremony, as the
fact that it is. The first ray of light struck the apex of the pyramid on which
we stood and the stone under our feet, which had been cold, was warm. The electromagnetic
field of the structure, which had been present but quiescent in the darkness,
reorganised itself around the new energy input and I felt it in the soles of my
feet — the hum of it, the same hum as the pillar in the Konark sanctum, the
same hum as the bamboo pyramid in the spare room in Delhi on the mornings when
the writing came easily, the same hum as the presence the Yogi carried with him
always and the Fakir wore like a second skin.
The hum of the universe
functioning.
The sound of things being,
correctly and fully, what they are.
"Arjun," Angel
said.
"Yes."
"It was always going
to be you."
I looked at her. The
morning light on her face. The grey-green eyes that had been, eleven thousand
years ago and on a mountain road in the Himalayas and at every point between
and beyond, the most direct line I knew to the thing that mattered.
"I know," I said.
"The leaf said —
" she started.
"I know what the leaf
said."
"And you're not
frightened."
"I was
frightened," I said, "when I thought you were going to call it a nice
meeting and drive away. Everything since then has felt like relief."
She looked at me for a long
moment with the expression that contained everything — the cave and the lake
and the volcanic tunnel and the king who built a city and the equinox ceremony
and the village above the lake and the doll with its impossible fabric and the
coins with their crop circle geometry and the submerged cities and the fragment
of Dwarka stone and this dawn, this pyramid, this apex, this wind now gone and
this sun now risen and this story that has been trying to arrive at this moment
since before either of us was born into the bodies we are currently inhabiting.
Then she kissed me. Not the
forehead-kiss of the Manasarovar shore — the complete kind. The kind that
requires no translation into any language.
Above us: the sky. The same
sky that had closed over the observatory as the flood took Atlantis and had
been present through every age of the story since — every flood and every
drought and every civilisation's rise and fall and the long patient revolutions
of the stars overhead. Still there. Still turning. Still making the argument
that the universe makes to anyone who looks up at the right moment: that it is
vast and old and full of the most extraordinary things, and that you —
specifically you, with your specific consciousness and your specific history
and your specific capacity to feel what you feel when you stand at the apex of
a forty-five-hundred-year-old pyramid at dawn with the person you have been
finding your way back to across eleven thousand years — you are one of the most
extraordinary things in it.
We watched the sun rise
over Egypt.
The same sun that had
powered the Atlantean observatory and the Konark temple and the Surya Namaskar
and the Surya Mantra and every photon that had ever driven a reaction in the
water of every body that had ever lived on this planet.
The same sun.
Always the same sun.

Chapter Thirty-Nine: The
Fifth Race — What the Deep Group Left for Us

Tariq found us at the base
of the pyramid at seven-thirty in the morning, drinking tea from a thermos he
had brought with the quiet competence of a man who knows that extraordinary
experiences are better processed with something warm in the hands.
He looked at us with the
measured assessment he brought to returning clients. He had seen many things at
the pyramid over thirty years. He had learned to classify returning climbers by
the quality of what they carried back from the apex — the tourists who had
climbed for the photograph and came back slightly breathless and pleased with
themselves, the pilgrims who had climbed for the experience and came back moved
in ways they could or could not articulate, and the rare third category: the
ones who had touched the zero point, the electromagnetic vortex, the place
where the ordinary boundaries of time become, as they were designed to become,
temporarily negotiable.
He classified us in the
third category without comment.
He poured the tea.
"Good?" he said.
"Yes," I said.
"The pyramid gives
what you are ready for," he said, in the manner of someone who has
observed this for thirty years and has made his peace with its implications.
"No more. Never less."
Angel was looking at the
pyramid. "The chambers below," she said. "The ones they haven't
opened. The Hall of Records."
"There are things
below," Tariq said carefully. "The authorities know this. The
ground-penetrating radar surveys have shown cavities — large ones, in
configurations that do not correspond to known geological formation or
construction record. The official position is that they have not been opened
because they have not been opened." He paused, which was its own form of
eloquence. "Edgar Cayce said the Hall of Records would be found when
humanity was ready to receive what it contained. He said this in 1932. He was
not wrong about the other things he said."
Angel looked at me.
I thought of what I had
placed there, in the vision — the notebooks, the calculations, the full archive
of a civilisation that had understood the geometry of consciousness and had not
quite managed to love sufficiently to save itself. Waiting, in alloy containers
designed to last fifteen thousand years, for the quality of attention that
would know what to do with them.
"Not yet," I
said. "But soon."
Tariq nodded, as though
this were a perfectly reasonable statement of timeline.

The
Hollow Earth — What the Deep Group Found
I want to tell you what I
believe the deep group found, based on what the visions have shown me and what
the traditions of every culture that has preserved the memory of the interior
world consistently describe.
The earth is not hollow in
the popular science-fiction sense — it does not contain a miniature sun or a
lost world of dinosaurs or any of the imagery that makes the idea easy to
dismiss. What the geophysics actually shows — what the seismic data, the magnetometric
surveys, the pressure calculations, and the behaviour of deep-earth mineral
formations actually demonstrates — is that the planet has a complex interior
architecture that the simple crust-mantle-core model does not fully describe.
There are spaces. Large
ones. Created by the same volcanic forces that created the lava tunnels beneath
Ajanta and the Aravallis and the Antarctic ice — but deeper, and older, and
more extensive. Spaces where the bioluminescent organisms that evolved in the
absence of sunlight have had billions of years to develop the kind of complex
ecosystems that surface life produces in the presence of solar energy. Spaces
where the earth's internal heat maintains temperatures compatible with life.
Spaces accessible through the polar openings that the planet's rotational
dynamics create at the geographic poles, where the centrifugal forces of the
spinning earth thin the crust to its minimum thickness.
The deep group went there.
And from there — through the mastery of the electromagnetic and gravitational
principles that their flying discs operated on, the same principles encoded in
the Konark temple and the Atlantean observatory and the bamboo pyramid in the
spare room in Delhi — they went further. To the seven planetary systems the
Admiral had visited. To others. To the vast, inhabited, extraordinarily diverse
community of conscious beings that the universe contains and that humanity has
been, across its long and difficult education, gradually preparing itself to
join.
They are still there.
Not waiting passively — the
deep group has not spent eleven thousand years doing nothing. They have been
working, learning, developing the understanding that the surface civilisation
will need and that the surface civilisation cannot develop in isolation,
precisely because the most important things to understand — the relationship
between consciousness and matter, the nature of time, the geometry that
underlies the structure of reality at every scale from the quantum to the
cosmic — require perspectives that are only available from outside the
limitations of a single planetary existence.
They communicate with the
surface. Through the crop circle formations that carry encoded messages in the
geometric language that both groups share — the language of the Yantra, the
language of the Konark wheels, the language of the pyramid's proportions.
Through the dreams and visions of the sufficiently prepared — the Yogis and the
sages and the Fakirs and the people who sit inside pyramids and arrive at zero
point and find that time is not the line they thought it was. Through the
underground monitoring systems in the observatories that the surface
civilisation has not yet found.
And through the DNA.
The genetic encoding that
Vara's group planted in the fifth race carries the memory and the capacity of
both groups. Every human being alive today has, within their genome, the
potential to access what Atlantis knew and what the deep group has continued to
learn. The neuro-scientists call it junk DNA — the ninety-five percent of the
human genome whose function is currently unknown. It is not junk. It is the
library.
The reading of it is what
the traditions call enlightenment, or samadhi, or gnosis, or the grace of God.
It is the moment when a consciousness developed sufficiently to access its own
deeper programming recognises itself as continuous with the consciousness that
has been learning, in various forms and on various planets and in various
centuries, since the first light.
It is what happened on the
apex of the pyramid at dawn, when the zero point opened and two people
remembered what they had always known.

The
Moment of Recognition — Stargate
The compass does not work
at zero point.
This is the physical fact
that underpins the metaphysical experience — the electromagnetic field at the
pyramid's apex is sufficiently concentrated and organised that it overrides the
earth's ambient magnetic field and renders magnetic navigation instruments
unreliable. The compass needle spins. The ordinary fixed point by which
direction is determined ceases to be fixed.
This is also what happens
to consciousness at zero point. The ordinary fixed points by which the mind
determines its orientation — past and future, here and there, self and other —
become temporarily negotiable. Not eliminated. Negotiable. Available for revision
in the light of a larger frame of reference.
The pyramid's apex is a
stargate.
Not in the sense of science
fiction — not a physical portal through which a body passes from one location
to another. In the sense that the Yogi described when he spoke of the Sushumna
channel and the Pancha Prana and the dimensional planes of consciousness
accessible to the sufficiently prepared mind. A point of sufficient
electromagnetic coherence that the ordinary limitations on temporal perception
— the limitation that we can only access the present moment, the limitation
that our consciousness exists in a single location at a single time —
temporarily dissolve.
The past is accessible. The
future is visible, in the probabilistic sense that the sage's palm leaf is
visible — not fixed, not determined, but the most probable trajectory of a
consciousness that has accumulated the understanding and the love sufficient to
make the best choices available to it.
And the other
consciousnesses — the deep group in their interior earth and their
interplanetary voyages, the surface group in their various lives and forms
across the eleven thousand years since the flood — are accessible. Not as
memory but as presence. The real-time connection across the dimensional planes
that the Sushumna permits, the connection that the Yogi described and
demonstrated and that I have been stumbling toward in the experiences of this
journey since the first night in the cave behind the waterfall.
This is what happened at
the apex.
This is what the pyramid
was built to do.
And this is why the deep
group, when the moment comes — when the surface civilisation has loved its way
into the readiness that knowledge alone cannot produce — will be able to simply
step through. No ships required. No physical crossing of the distance between
where they are and where we are. The stargate will open from both sides
simultaneously, and the species that divided in order to survive will recognise
itself and be whole.
The timing is not theirs to
determine. It is ours.
The surface civilisation's
readiness is the key. The deep group cannot return until we have developed,
collectively, the quality of love that makes the return sustainable — that
makes the reunion something other than one very advanced group overwhelming a
less advanced group with capabilities the less advanced group cannot yet
steward responsibly.
This is what the Yogi has
been preparing. What the Fakir has been preparing. What the sage with the palm
leaf has been preparing, writing the story of every soul that passes through
this civilisational moment, tracking the development of each consciousness
toward the readiness that the reunion requires.
This is what Angel has been
preparing, in every life — seeding the knowledge that the fifth race needs to
develop the love that will open the gate.
This is what this book has
been preparing.
You are reading it now.
Which means the preparation
is working.

Epilogue to Part Six — What
Einstein Would Say

E = MC².
Energy equals mass times
the speed of light squared.
This is the most famous
equation in the history of human science. It says, in four symbols, something
that it takes pages to say in words: that matter and energy are not different
things. They are the same thing in different configurations — mass is frozen
energy, energy is liberated mass, and the speed of light squared is the
conversion factor, the exchange rate between the two states of a single
substance that underlies everything that exists.
The universe is made of one
thing.
Einstein spent the last
thirty years of his life looking for the Unified Field Theory — the single
equation that would describe not just the relationship between mass and energy
but the relationship between all four of the fundamental forces of nature: gravity,
electromagnetism, and the two nuclear forces. He did not find it. He died
believing he had not found it.
He was closer than he knew.
The Unified Field is not a
mathematical abstraction. It is what the Yogi calls the field of consciousness
— the substrate from which both matter and energy arise, the medium in which
both the pyramid's electromagnetic focusing and the human mind's capacity for
love are expressions of the same deeper property of reality. The geometry that
describes the structure of the field is the same geometry as the Yantra, the
Konark wheel, the DNA helix, the proportion of the pyramid. The same geometry
at every scale.
Einstein intuited this. He
said, late in his life: "A human being is a part of the whole called by us
'universe,' a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his
thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest — a kind of optical
illusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us."
The pyramid dissolves the
prison. The zero point opens the prison door. What you find on the other side
is not liberation from the self but the expansion of the self to its actual
size — which is the size of the universe it is made of and is continuous with.
The ships and the planes
that disappear in the Bermuda Triangle disappear because the crystal pyramid
structure below the water is still functioning — still focusing the
electromagnetic and gravitational fields, still creating the vortex that the
Atlantean designers intended, still available as a stargate for the
consciousness sufficiently prepared to use it and a hazard for the technology
and the navigation systems that are not prepared for the field it generates.
The multi-verses that the
physicists are increasingly confident exist — the parallel probability spaces
that quantum mechanics requires and cosmology is beginning to confirm — are not
separate universes in the science-fiction sense of sealed-off realities. They
are interpenetrating planes of the single field, accessible to the
consciousness sufficiently refined to perceive them, the same planes that the
Yogi navigated through the Sushumna channel and the sage navigated through the
Akashic record and the deep group navigates through the technology of
mind-powered flight.
All of it — the tantra and
the mantra and the yantra, the yoga and the meditation and the pranayama, the
palm leaf and the pyramid and the Konark wheel and the crop circle and the DNA
— all of it is a curriculum. An education in the nature of what we are, offered
at every level of the civilisational development from the most accessible to
the most demanding, in forms that every culture in every age can receive at
their current level of readiness.
The curriculum has one
subject: love.
Not love as sentiment. Love
as the fundamental property of consciousness — the quality that makes
connection possible, that makes knowledge generous rather than hoarding, that
makes the advanced civilisation a teacher rather than a conqueror, that made Vara's
group return to the surface to seed rather than dominate, that made the
Admiral's group go under to learn rather than to escape.
Love is what the universe
is doing when it is doing its best work.
Love is what we are when we
are at our most ourselves.
The pyramid knows this. The
deep group knows this. The Yogi has always known this.
Now you know it too.
